COSRX – Ultimate Nourishing Rice Overnight Spa Mask Review

Back again with yet another COSRX product. I just love them!

Enriched with more than 65% of rice extract, this mask provides intensive nourishment with deep moisture and brightening. Were you curious as to why I decided to purchase this? It had the magical words: Deep moisture and brightening!

How cute is the above illustration from COSRX?! Did you notice how COSRX used a rice cake as their main character for all their ads for this product. This is because the mask is meant to make your skin as soft, as smooth and as hydrated as a rice cake 😀 Just look at miss rice cake enjoying her pamper sessions!

I’ve added the COSRX’s Ultimate Nourishing Rice Overnight Spa Mask to my skincare routine for a couple of weeks now, and I finally feel confident enough to talk about my experience so far.

I remember reading other bloggers reviews on the Rice overnight spa mask just before I got my hands on one, and they all had one thing in common… they loved it! However, what intrigued me most had to be that most of them preferred the rice mask over the honey one. I would always reach out for anything with honey without hesitation, but as usual, there is an exception to everything :p

Ingredients: Oryza sativa (rice) extract (65%), butylene glycol, glycerin, helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, betaine, niacinamide, dimethicone, 1,2-hexanediol, cetearyl olivate, sorbitan olivate, elaeis guineensis (palm) oil, guineensis (palm) kernel oil, hydroxyethyl acrylate/sodium acryloyldimethyl taurate copolymer, cetearyl alcohol, ethylhexylglycerin, arginine, carbomer, allantoin, xanthan gum

The ingredient that stands out the most for me has to be the rice extract. Rice is well known for its numerous skin benefits such as: brightens, shrinks pores, heals acne and maintains skin’s elasticity. This is why you should add some rice to your skincare :p

How to use it?

You can use this mask in 3 ways.

  1. An overnight mask – slather an appropriate amount all over your face and wash it off in the morning.
  2. Quick mask session – Apply a thin / thick layer ( depending on your skin condition ) and leave on for 15-20 minutes before you wash off with warm water.
  3. Moisturizer – Apply a thin layer as your daily moisturizer ( or before applying your makeup)

My experience?

Packaging wise, it is very simple and sleek just like every other COSRX product, and I really like it. If you have read my previous Cosrx post on the Galactomyces 95 Whitening Power Essence *shameless self promo* you would understand why cosrx opts for the simple packaging, it is for our benefit! Any who, there is nothing much to the packaging except that its a normal tub with a screw off lid.

The mask is white in color, almost odorless and appears to be quite thick at first glance. As you apply it on, you’ll notice the mask has a light cream-like consistency and quickly sinks in to the skin. The rate of absorption depends on the quantity you apply, thinner layers sink in to the skin faster than thicker ones. So how much should you apply? Totally depends on your skin condition prior to applying the mask, and how you would like to use it. I usually use it as an overnight mask. On days where my skin feels dry and patchy, I’d apply a thicker layer than normal and sleep with it on. You’d be surprised to know that my skin absorbs it all up within 5 minutes leaving behind very little residue similar to normal facial creams.

When I first introduced the rice overnight spa mask in to my routine, I noticed a weird tingly sensation that took me off guard and slightly worried me. No one had ever mentioned it before, and I assumed I has going to have an allergic reaction to one of their ingredients. However, after extensive research, it turns out to be completely normal and wears off after 3-4 applications.

Results? Unlike other sleeping masks I’ve tried, you really need to be diligent and add this mask to your daily routine to see positive results. There were a couple of thing I noticed after using this mask continuously for a couple of weeks. The most prominent result had to be how bright my face looks. To my surprise, I managed to get a tan during summer despite religiously applying sunscreen every couple of hours! After using this mask (and the It’s Skin VC Effector serum) there has been a significant difference, and my tan is definitely gone, revealing a brighter, healthy looking complexion.

Moisture wise, I wasn’t really blown away by the results, as it didn’t really moisturize my skin as much as the Laneige water sleeping mask. I would say that this mask is more suitable for people with combination to oily skin, rather than dry skin. Those with dry, patchy skin would be better off with more hydrating or moisture intensive masks like the Laneige water sleeping mask or the Innisfree Green Tea sleeping pack.

Overall, my skin condition has definitely improved after using this mask. My skin feels a lot softer, looks brighter, healthier, and more awake (if that makes any sense). Another positive insight is that there hasn’t been any breakout due to this product, so far so good 🙂

Would I recommend this mask?

Yes! If you are in search for a brightening and nourishing mask, then this is the one for you. Also note that I feel very safe using and recommending COSRX products because of the level of care they put in to their ingredients. To my knowledge, all their products are free of harmful ingredients such as Parabens and many others.
