The Beauty Edit: How to get rid of acne scars FAST.

Acne scars will always be the bane of our existence. Even if it’s just a teeny weenie one right on your hairline, it will always stand out like a sore thumb.

I’ve had my fair share of acne scars. I still remember how horrible my skin was the moment dear old puberty struck. My skin changed overnight, or at least that’s what it seemed like to me. All I remember is waking up to extremely oily, dull looking skin that broke out almost every week or so.

I knew a skincare routine was much needed. But just like every other 13 year old (back in the day), I didn’t know where to start or what to do. Fast forward… almost 10 years later, I finally understood my skin and learnt how to control it. But one of my proudest skincare achievements would have to be the moment I learnt how to effectively reduce acne scars within a week!

Disclaimer: I’m no dermatologist (though I wish I was). All details mentioned below is a result of research and trial and error. The below routine has worked well for me with every breakout. However, be advised that what works for me might not work as well for everyone else.

Acne Scar reduction routine:

This routine comes with 3 main products/devices that have revolutionized my skincare routine and would recommend to my closest friends. However, just like any skincare routine, for best results, being consistent is key!  All you need is 20 min and you’ll be done. You only need to do it once every 10 days!

Cleansing system

My cleansing system of choice would have to be the Clarisonic Mia Fit. With it’s 2 speed settings – delicate & power cleanse,  you’d be able to prevent breakout before they even get a chance to happen. Clarisonic promises to cleanse your skin 6x better than using your hands alone effectively removing impurities, sunscreen and makeup residue within a minute.

I can testify that the Clarisonic is a must have skincare item. Cleansing the skin is an important part of skincare and needs to be done right for the other steps to work as effectively as possible, and for your skin to be in it’s best condition.

Let’s do a mini experiment. Just feel you face for a second. Does your skin feel bumpy even though there is no pimple in sight? Does it feel rough and look dull? If you’ve answered yes to any of these, then you need a better cleansing routine. Even if you’re someone that doesn’t suffer from breakouts, you’d still benefit from a cleansing system.

The reason I’d recommend Clarisonic in a heartbeat is because it works! I’ve tried cheaper cleansing alternatives and nothing worked as well. The clarisonic deeply yet delicately cleanses the skin removing all impurities without damaging the skin or drying it out. And if you suffer with “bumpy skin” like I do, then the clarisonic will be your new BFF. Those bumps will go within 2 weeks (I kid you not!)

I prefer the Clarisonic Mia fit because of it’s new compact, lightweight design that is travel friendly (and looks super cute)! You may purchase one from Sephora

Derma rolling

Derma rolling (a.k.a Micro needling) is something I totally swear by and recommend to anyone. However, before you start derma rolling I would advise you to do you research and look in to how it is done to avoid serious issues. Here is a good video by my girl Morgan, that teaches you the basics of derma rolling:

Types of derma rollers

Take note of the various derma rollers available in the market and ensure to select the one that suits your needs best. The micro needles sizes range between 0.2mm and 3.0mm. Ideally, 0.2mm – 1mm is sufficient for minor issues such as acne reduction. I do not recommend going higher than 1mm, instead go to your dermatologist and have them do it for you (be safe!)

  • 0.2mm-0.3mm micro needles are the go to size if improved absorption of skin care products is what you are after.
  • 0.5mm micro needles are perfect treating shallow wrinkles, UV damage, light scarring, and hyper pigmentation. It also boosts the skin’s ability to absorb skin care products.
  • In addition to all the above benefits, 1mm micro needles are perfect when it comes to dealing with stretch marks, acne scars & wrinkles. 1mm micro needles result in smoother skin texture and an even skin complexion
  • 1.5mm-2.0mm needles can be used to treat several skin issues (not for face). They are ideal for treatment of mild to not-so-severe scars, wrinkles, and stretch marks
  • 3.0mm needles should only be used by professionals and should be used on hardened regions such as thighs, feet, arms, lower and upper back. Check out this site for more details.

What on earth is a derma roller? As you can tell from the above image, a derma roller is a basically a plastic stick with a head full of micro needles.

Derma rolling increases the skin’s absorption rate of all the products you apply. How?  While derma rolling, you create teeny channels on your skin that will absorb anything you put on the skin. The skincare products you apply post derma rolling, really play an important role in improving your skin’s condition. The product I highly recommend post derma rolling is mentioned below.

The science behind derma rolling and minimizing acne scars is that 1mm micro needles are meant to penetrate the skin and cause tiny tears (not visible to the naked eye). The process tricks your skin in to thinking that it’s going through trauma & triggers the production of collagen (an essential protein that holds your skin together looking young, plump and wrinkle free). Since your skin is not really experiencing any trauma, the excess collagen would help in diminishing acne scars, stretch marks and help slow down wrinkles.

Derma rolling is also known for gently exfoliating and increasing blood flow. Both of which are essential for deep cleansing your pores and giving the skin a radiant, healthy glow.

I usually stock up on 1mm derma rollers from

Post derma rolling – Cosrx Galactomyces 95 Whitening Power Essence

I’ve raved about this Korean skincare product before and my love for it hasn’t changed a bit. The Cosrx Galactomyces 95 Whitening Power Essence is a must have skincare product. Check out my post on the Galactomyces Essence for a detailed review.

The Galactomyces 95 Whitening Power Essence contains 95% of galactomyces which is another fancy term for fermented yeast. The benefits of fermented yeast for the skin are endless but here are my top 3:

  • Well known multifunctional asian ingredient that helps in improving the overall health of the skin.
  • Brightens and evens out the skin tone
  • Provides the skin with the nutrients it needs to retain moisture and be healthy from within.

Although this essence is a part of my daily skincare routine, I find that slathering it on the skin and massaging it to the skin post derma rolling really seals the deal when it comes to minimizing acne scars. The teeny channels from the derma rolling enables our skin to really absorb the essence and let it do it’s magic. You will notice results within 24 hours but within a week your scars would be significantly less visible.

Repeat the process every 10 days and your skin will thank you. Not only will your acne scars have faded but your skin would clear up and look healthier.

You may purchase the Cosrx Galactomyces Essence at Jolse. Highly recommend this site for Korean skincare purchases. Delivery is within 10-14 working days and you get loads of samples 😀 Alternatively, If you are based in Dubai (and GCC), you may order it from The BB Cream Girl .

Hope this routine helps with minimizing your acne scars as it did with mine. Do you have tried and tested tips on minimizing acne scars? let us know in the comment section below!
